Pontifical Council for Social Communications

Art. 169

1. The Council is concerned with questions about the media of social communication, in order that, through these media, the message of salvation and human progress may be able to bring about an improvement in culture and in conduct.

2. In carrying out its functions, it should work closely with the Secretariat of State.

Art. 170

1. The Council performs the principal duty of initiating and supporting, as circumstances indicate, the action of the Church and of the faithful in the multiple forms of social communication; and of stimulating newspaper, and periodicals, films, and radio and television broadcasts to be increasingly permeated by a more human and Christian spirit.

2. It is to follow with special attention Catholic newspapers, periodical publications, and radio and television stations, so that they may really live up to their character and purpose, above all, spreading the Church's teaching as proposed by the Magisterium, and giving correct and accurate coverage to news events of a religious character.

3. It is to maintain relations with the Catholic associations which work in the area of social communications.

4. It will stimulate Christians, especially on the occasion of the World Communications Day celebration, to become aware of their duty to encourage these media to be open to the service of the Church's pastoral mission".
